Your Guide to Summer 2026 with Legend Surf Co
Summer 2026 is fast approaching, and there’s no better time than now to schedule your surf lessons in East Hampton, Amagansett, or Montauk with us at Legend Surf Co!
Why legend surf co
Legend surf co has been in business for 5 years now, and we have quickly emerged as one of the premier surf schools in the hamptons. From the moment you make contact with us, you will be in touch with a real human, who intimately knows our business, our schedule, and the surf conditions. We will treat you like family, because as soon as you connect with us, that is how we see you. Along with the close relationships that we develop with our customers, what truly sets us apart from other hamptons surf schools is our flexibility and versatility. We have a large team of mobile instructors, and we will take you surfing wherever you want in East Hampton, Amagansett, or Montauk, any day of the week, from sunrise until sunset. Given our large team, we hardly ever book out, and we have a receptionist on the phone 24/7, so we can take the most last minute of lessons without any issue.
Our instructors are, at the bare minimum, all CPR certified watermen and waterwomen. Many of our instructors expertise far exceeds your typical surf coach on the east coast. In fact, every year we have pro surfers from Hawaii join our staff for the season, who have experience competing and coaching at the very highest level. With their presence comes an unmatched level of expertise, as well as a perspective on surfing and life from a different part of the world. From the newest beginners to advanced short boarders, and from one on one private lessons to 10 person groups, we are built to give you a customized experience that you will never forget.
Prices and group sizes
Our private (one on one) lessons match you with one instructor, whose undivided attention will be yours. These lessons cost $165 per hour, and usually run for one hour (that is what we recommend for starters), although you can book an instructor for as long as you would like (and can afford). Private lessons are great for beginners who want undivided attention, individuals of any skill level who are looking for a quiet meditative time away from their busy lives, and advanced surfers looking for one on one coaching. We will discuss your technique, ocean awareness, and forecast reading, along with anything else that you would like to talk about; all while being your own personal lifeguard.
Small group lessons (2 or 3 students) will match you with 2 or 3 instructors, depending on your skill level, needs, and the conditions. These lessons cost $130 per surfer per hour. Even though small groups are not technically private lessons, you will still have a very close ratio of instructors to students (often even 1:1), giving the lesson a super personalized feel. Small group lessons are great for surf buddies who want to push each other, or as bonding time with your parent, child, or significant other.
Large groups (4 or more students) will match you with no less than half the amount of instructors as students involved (4 students 2 instructors, 8 students 4 instructors, etc.). While a 2:1 ratio is our bare minimum, the ratio often ends up being closer to 3:2, as we always prioritize giving our customers as many hands on as possible. It keeps the lessons efficient, personalized, and most importantly, safe. There are no other surf schools in the hamptons that consistently provide such a good ratio of students to instructors for large groups.
In addition to our standard lessons, we offer surf camps (based on demand), where we match students with others of their skill level/ age demographic. These camps cost $100 per surfer per hour, and still maintain a 2:1 student to instructor ratio. So if you are looking to meet some surf friends, or simply save some money, you can request a camp; we can always find other students to match you with.
What’s included/ what to expect
Once you reach out to us and schedule a lesson, we will give you a detailed meeting point, where you can connect with your instructor(s). Try to show up 10 minutes early, as our instructors will need to set you up with the appropriate boards and suits. And on that note, boards and wetsuits come complimentary with the lesson. You can be sure that we will have the right size wetsuits and boards for you if you need them, but of course, you are also welcome to bring your own. We will always be sure to have your boards waxed and ready to go ahead of time. If you are a first time surfer, we will spend the first 15-20 minutes of your first lesson going over all of the fundamentals on the beach- just to make sure that you understand clearly what to do ahead of time before meeting your first wave. After lesson number one, we will only do out-of-water coaching upon request. Throughout the lessons, our coaching style will be dependent on your needs (pushing you into waves, swimming you and your board back through the lineup, and surfing alongside of you are all on the table). We can assure you that at any point if you need physical assistance, there will be an instructor right by your side to assist you, every step of the way.
Ditch plains is the standard for beginner surf breaks in The Hamptons. It is Montauk’s answer to Waikiki or San Onofre. Thanks to the gradually sloping cobblestone bottom, waves feather and mush at ditch, rather than loading up and folding over like many of the surrounding beaches’ waves. This allows for a mellow and slopey drop. Another feature of Ditch is that the reefs at trailer park to the east, and poles to the west, act as swell magnets, leaving a relatively waveless zone between the two points. Waveless zones mean paddle-out highways; surfers can get into the water in between the two ends of the beach, and paddle to either reef, dealing with minimal wave action on the way out. The only downside to Ditch is the crowd. It can get crowded. Very crowded. The silver lining in this? The majority of surfers out at Ditch are fellow beginners. There is not much of a local pecking order or competitive vibe (unless the waves get bigger, which is not the day for beginners anyway).
